The work is a collection of popular proverbs, transcribed and completed by Alejandro Sánchez Ongay, who continued the work started by his uncle Gaudencio Ongay. Gaudencio collected some one hundred and thirty-seven thousand proverbs, of which 2,141 proverbs are Navarrese paremias, which will be published in a future work.

Collection of popular sayings "Gaudencio Ongay"

It is a collection of popular proverbs that Gaudencio Ongay began and continued by Alejandro Sánchez Ongay, his nephew, who promised to continue working on the collection. At that time it was estimated that it consisted of one hundred and thirty-seven thousand proverbs. They are collected in alphabetical order according to the initial letter. Although many are similar, with small variations, all versions have been recorded. Alejandro Sánchez has done the work mainly of transcribing the cards he received in 2002. Each card contained a saying. Not all of them have references or comments, so, for this edition, they have been deleted and can be consulted in the documentation center, where the data will be completed. The tokens of the first letters are not preserved, as they were transcribed into sheets by Gaudencio Ongay himself.

In addition to the transcription, Alejandro Sánchez Ongay has prepared a document with words and expressions, as well as Latin maxims that appear in the comments and notes. He has also written several annexes with paremias that do not appear in the collection. If you have added any proverbs to the initial collection, you indicate it with the word “added.” In the case of the Navarrese proverb, 2,141 have been located, of which 492 do not appear in the collection.

He has prepared a bibliography with the books that served as a basis for Gaudencio Ongay, he has included a few more references, but he has not searched or compared or contrasted the proverbs with other sources.

A more detailed description can be found in the book presentation.

ABOUT THE COLLECTOR

GAUDENCIO Ongay ZorozA (1924-2002)

He was born in Ujué / Uxue on February 12, 1924. Fourth child of Emilio Ongay and Francisca Zoroza. Due to family needs, the Ongay-Zoroza family moves to live in Beire. Given the environment prior to the civil war, they returned to Ujué / Uxue, where they resided for seven years. As a young man he entered the seminary and studied ecclesiastical studies. He abandons religious life and marries Etelvina. They will have a daughter: Lourdes. He began working in the Olite sawmill, as a clerk and accountant. He subsequently acquired the status of official of the Ministry of Labor, from which he would be transferred to the Navarro Institute of Occupational Health.

From his time at the seminary he retains his love for calligraphy in English letters, which is combined with great skill in drawing. Hand-copied and illustrated Don Quixote twice. He also becomes a great collector, especially of proverbs. He buys more than a hundred books related to the proverb, and he would invent and number them. Alejandro Sánchez Ongay, his nephew, has recorded practically all of these sources in this edition. His hobby as an amanuensis makes him order and copy the proverbs from those books one by one, but also – and this is the most interesting thing – to include new paremias, many coming from the oral tradition. With immeasurable patience and tenacity, he assembled this enormous collection throughout his life. This unprecedented passion led him to collect, in his own words, “more than 100,000 Castilian proverbs.”

He died in Pamplona on June 16, 2002 at the age of 78.
