Safeguarding manual ringing of bells

BELL RINGING INVENTORY

The manual ringing of bells, a non-verbal and sound language, has functioned over the centuries as a means of communication, fulfilling a set of social functions for the community: informing, coordinating, delimiting the territory and protecting.

Spanish manual bell ringing has been part of UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2022.

DOCUMENTARIES AND DISSEMINATION MATERIALS

Our bells, bell towers and bell ringers

bells tokens

Each parish church or hermitage will record in its file its history and context in which it was made. Thus, the number of bells will be included with a detailed file for each bell, including its measurements, its state of conservation, epigraphy, year of casting, ringing mechanism, traditional and current ringing, as well as proposals for improvement regarding the bronze. . The need to make small tokens on the bells is motivated by being the material good that allows us to ring. Documenting the bell is also documenting the culture and traditions of that place.

Belfry tower description sheets

Together with these sheets on the bells, an assessment of the bell tower will be included: typology, number of openings, organization of the bells in it... It is important to record the state of the bell tower, since in many cases it is the state of conservation of the bell tower or from the bell room which prevents manual ringing of the bells from being possible.

Interviews with the bell ringers

Focused interviews adapted to the reality of the localities and the bell ringers of the parishes, where many traditions that involve ringing bells are still alive, although at a critical moment. For the questionnaires, the bell inventory methodology of Francesc Llop i Bayo and Francesc Xavier Martín Noguera, and the Campaners of Valencia, has been followed. This survey addresses the following material and immaterial aspects: description of the tower, the bells and the ringing; interview with bell ringers; reception of messages and control of reception; recording of ringing on the bell tower and on the street (soundscape or sonography); compilation of descriptions and other materials. Data and records will also be incorporated regarding the soundscape or sonographies of each territory and the specific vocabulary referring to the bells and their ringing, both directly and in a figurative sense in paremias and sayings.
